I’m not a fan of SEO competitions, as a form of link building I just think the mighty G gets wise to them if they reach any sort of scale so in the end they arn’t worth the time nor efforts of all involved.

That said I thought i’d throw this page up not conforming to the rules of the competition, but merely to see where it could rank against motivated people who are going after the massive $10,000 jackpot for ranking no.1 for the phrase Makeityourring Diamond Engagement Rings.

My name is Paul David Smith and I am a UK based search consultant and webmaster of the mighty Gifts Guide UK (the site your on people). I’m not a party pooper, I don’t want to stop a competition running if I do manage to rank this page at no.1, I just want to compete in my own little way.

If anybody does want to win the competition go and register the exact match domain name very quickly in .com/.net/.org/etc and you will be very difficult to budge from the #1 spot. Then it’s all about links, how many links can you get pointing at your page with the anchor text “Makeityourring Diamond Engagement Rings”. Not a difficult task, but if somebody comes in with a ready made network of authority sites and decide they want to compete, it hardly makes it a fair competition.

February Update

So at the end of January GiftsGuideUK.com are sitting in 3rd place for the term Makeityourring Diamond Engagement Rings and I’m somewhat surprised by the lack of competition if I’m honest. Lots of pages have been thrown up, but nobody seems to be taking the competition seriously yet.

The question now is do I start to take the competition seriously, not to win the prize – we’ve discussed that, but to aim to be at no.1 at the end of the year. As it stands our efforts for January to rank for the term were minimal, which makes me think if we chuck a load of links at this maybe it will rank no.1. I think I might just spend some time working on it this month and see where we sit at the end of February.

On another note The Affiliate Manager for ShireeOdiz.com contacted me to mention that the competition is real and prizes will be being paid out. There’s been a lot of discussion in the comments below about whether or not anyone is actually going to win anything, but the email I received said:

This week, we will be offering cash prizes of hundreds of dollars for each position #1, #5 and #10. There will be more, larger prizes as the contest goes on.

So if anyone receives any prize for the competition, update everybody using the comment form below, it could certainly help give the competition some credibility.
